I went to work this morning and came home to find my brooder light off, my 5 day old button quail had been in this state for i assume 6 hours, i opened the lid fearfully to find 4 huddled in a corner and 5 appeared lifeless, in a state...
i'd go for 10 hens you wouldnt need more if it was for personal use
why dont you just buy two hens?
plastic is easier as the cardboard gets all soggy from their water and their urm..poo lol but if you can replace often im sure you'll be fine
i'd keep the chicks seperate for the first 6 weeks or so until they're big enough, and then you have the dilemma of the rooster attacking any males in the future, they could have been runts he was trying to protect his flock by killing...
i did a dry incubation on my button quail and hatched 7/8 chicks
very nice looking tidy brooder, plenty of air and heat and light, congrats   have a non slip mat down
temp is fine i personally do dry hatches and average at 90% hatch but like you say everyone is very different sorry i couldnt be more help
haha me and my friend discussed that last week, a big house everyone works for their food, growing, selling, sharing the bills yet everyone having their own space i'd be up for that, i was watching one on tv before i started getting...
