The hen knows better than any of us.  Especially if this isnt her first rodeo...  I have seen hens continuously kick eggs out of their nest,  mark them,  and it always be the same egg.  So I guess she knew it...
Age difference isnt as big of a problem with chicks as it is with some other poultry as long as the younger ones have access to food and water as well and can escape the bigger ones if they need to...   Or you could always...

Its only a problem if they eat a lot and get compacted.  Grit helps with this.  They are going to peck at/eat anything you put them on,  including paper towels.   Quote: Originally Posted by...

I have about 40 acres that I rent.... and my land lord is a lush.   He always thinks hes going crazy when he shows up and theres a couple more critters running around.  We never asked permission just kinda built a coop...

Also put some electrolytes in her water....   I use gatorade...   never had this problem but it certainly cant hurt.
