I would consider getting the bucket- style nest box, they look easy enough to put in and will be much easier to get the eggs
My little 2 1/2 week olds like to roost, but I have to put them on it. Have you tried setting each one on it? I have one that wants nothing to do with the roost at all.

I used a large dog crate lined with a cardboard box and a light shining into it. It seems to work very well for 6 chicks.
