Moulting can be a mess! Feathers everywhere. Even tho I'd read all about it the first time I saw it I thought, "My god, can a bird get thru this?!"    They are somewhat sensitive during the moult and I try not to handle...

Thanks everyone for info. It did sound kinda cat-like. And it did sound hormonally induced! The noise has ceased since last week so maybe there's a bobcat out there mating somewhere.   Fox or bobcat, I'm continuing to free...

Well, it doesn't rain in LA (comparatively) so you're good on staying dry.  They also poop when they free range so consider that.    You didn't ask about noise but there are some posts on BYC occasionally...

I've been in the same boat. The same annoying, loud, obnoxious boat.    If you totally (you've got to be disciplined!) ignore them for the time period you want them to be quiet (dawn until ?PM), they will eventually hush...

Buy organic. Shouldn't that cover  it? No soy, don't know.    What's available at your local feed store? 

Sorry you had an attack.    Perhaps it's the "somehow" part that is bothering them. Is the coop now predator proof?    If so, I would lock them in for a few days, then let them out right before sunset. Maybe...
