I took mine out when they were about 2 months old. I put a heat lamp in their coop. I wouldn't let them free range with other or else they will peck them and they could injure them. Just put them by themselves. I don't think it would be...
I actually didn't give my silkies from cackle hatchery grit. Just starter feed and they all lived. Well except three but two because they got sick from the ride from cackle to the postal office and one died of cold weather.
Yes, I didn't buy grit or sand for my chicks. They just had the dirt from outside in their coop.
SILKIES!! I miss mine I never got to see them full grown :'( .

Back then when my dad had chickens and the hens had chicks he said he'd just give them corn and they were fine. Then why do we give chick starter food? Does it affect their size or health?
