Well, we found a vet who actually agreed to do surgery for a severely impacted crop on our 2-year old Jersey Giant hen. He pulled out 3.5 pounds (seriously!!!) of sand, gravel, grain and hay, and then flushed and closed her back up....
2 years ago we purchased 3 Jersey Giant chicks, who turned out to be wonderful hens. One of them has always been a heavy eater, and if she were a human, I suppose she would be consider "obese". She free-ranges along with everybody...
We currently have no rooster, and therefor decided to let one of our hens, who goes broody every month or so,  hatch a fertile duck egg. Everything went well, and she successfully hatched a little Pekin duckling. He is 4 weeks old...
Update: went and got 3 hens (as a "starter stock", just to see how things would work out). So far, so good. All 5 are co-existing happily, and nobody is getting "worn out".
...and now the question arises, what to do with them. I have no other ducks (only a flock of chickens), and therefor must decide whether to keep these boys in a separate area with only each other as company, or whether to get them some...
Hahaha, you guys have no idea: I'm a Nazi, when it comes to finding homes for my animals. I go to peoples' houses, inspect them, and make sure even the roosters I let go off are going to good places, and not someone's dinner table...
