I've found that when the hatch date is approaching it's best to "lock up" the broody hen by herself and then no intruders can molest her or her new babies. My brooder box is just big enough for two nice sized nest and has one opening...
Update on the new chicks...
3 out of 4 eggs hatched but one chick was attacked by another hen ( not surrogate mama ) and killed
The 2 remaining chicks have just followed mama out of the brooder box for the first time...
Close the door tight on your brooder box! One of my non-broody hens snuck into my brooder box and killed one of my new babies
I sealed up the door better now so that will NOT happen again!
