When hens get past 2 years old they don't tend to lay every day.  Some breeds lay less than others as they age depending on breed.  I don't think it has anything to do with the rooster, especially if he has been around them...
I have noticed that birds of a feather flock together.  It sounds like my chickens mix together more than yours, but I've noticed that chickens of a similar color hang out together more.

It probably could be 10% of their diet to supplement protein.  But the layer pellets really are supposed to be nutritionally balance for laying chickens.
