Well I thought that, but she wanted nothing to do with it the other day.
Well she just kinda randomly runs around the yard and flaps and talks just randomly. She was usually fairly calm and now she seems kind of just nuts. I am sure it is just because she is out and about now after being broody, and then the silkie came ut with the babies and she started fighting her... maybe a dominance pecking order kind of a thing... crazy girl.
On a different note, my Speckled Sussex that I had to take her baby away from her seems to have lost her mind. Is that normal?
OMG   So I posted a while back about an egg that my silkie was sitting on but I wasnt sure if it was going to hatch since she had her other babies to deal with. Well she gave up on it and I was bummed out so I decided to try something. I wrapped the egg up in a heated blanket, set the temp on high and I have left it there for about 2 days, turning it every once in a while. Well I just went down, tapped on the egg and heard a...
Just to update, everything is going well!   I am probably going to be moving babies and mom outside to the coop tomorrow. We will see though. The egg I gave her a few days ago seems to have been abandoned. I even contemplated walking around with it in my shirt to keep it warm, but I doubt it will hatch (hatch date is apparently tomorrow). If an egg gets to cold a few days before hatch, is it totally done for?
YAY ok that hug made me feel better!   Yes I think I woke up to peace in the house finally. Mama and babies are good, and my speckled sussex is roaming the yard. I am hoping to take some pictures soon. The little silkie month old is ridiculously cute. It looks like a little powder puff :)
I went and checked on everyone tonight, and all babies are accounted for (even the month old is under mama). I am a bit concerned about my SSussex though. I had to put her back with the flock since she was having issues with properly taking care of her babies. I noticed tonight that she was sleeping in the nest box. Do I need to be worried about this?? What if there is an egg there and she is sitting again? Should I try to put one of the babies under her again and see if...
well its a strange thing. She goes underneath the silkie, and the silkie is fine with that. Its just when they are all up moving around the silkie somewhat pecks at the month old more of like a what are you doing calm down. I am thinking about putting them back outside this weekend, but sectioning them off since the other little one was stepped on by another hen. I am not sure why the mom didnt protect her.   The other hens were pretty uninterested by the month old...
Will the hen I tossed back outside do ok without her baby? I was concerned that she might go and sit on another egg or something. BUT her poop is back to normal and she isnt freaking out so far in the yard. Any thoughts?
Sigh, never a dull moment right? Sometimes I feel as though I am not cut out for this chicken thing. I had to make the hard decision today to take my speckled sussexs baby away from her and toss her back out into the flock. I just dont think she is cut out for motherhood. While her and the other broody where in our kitty pool set up she kept pecking her baby and the silkies babies. When I took her and her baby outside she did nothing really to protect it from the other...
