I've also always been told not to give anything ending in 'caine" to waterfowl too.  Many medications that are okay for chickens are not okay for waterfowl.   Is your drakes wing gone, or only the feathers gone?
I usually wait till they go into their night housing on their own or with minimal effort on my part before letting them free range.  I've found that to be a good indicator.

I've had muscovies nest up in things, like rafters, shevles, etc.   Nice that she came back!
