Yup, I'd return it. And ask for the supervisor if an employee gave me the "what for" comment. I don't think the feed store would want the reputation that they sell bad feed.

I'm so very sorry for your loss!! I also think you should take time to grieve before making any big decisions. Better to have a clear head then than to accidentally cause more damage, including something that might damage you, too....
