Nope, the rooster will help protect his flock, but his main purpose is if you want fertilized eggs for more chicks. So if you just want the eggs for consumption, No rooster is needed.

Well Catherine, we have our Tractor Supply in Eastpointe (Clarksburg/Bridgeport). Maybe a chickenstock could be started here too. Its perfectly situated in the middle of the state on the Northern side.  I'm way too new in the hobby...
Not sure what to do but if you have power and a brooder lamp, could you put one of those in the vicinity to help warm the area. Might help out til someone else posts.
Well my 10 week old chickens have been in their coop for about a week or two. I try to let them out of their run everyday and sometimes if I am home, I will put them in my 5x10 chicken tractor and leave them out for a while. Too many...
