i am having the same problem with the "bare butt". my question is this - if it were mites, wouldn't ALL my chix have this "missing feather" problem? only about half of my 27 chix are missing the rear-end feathers, so...
i just had the same thing happen this weekend. my first chicken death. only 9 months old.she was in the coop acting totally normal, when i went back to the coop a few hours later - dead!just laying there on the floor, dead as doornail....
