My RIR's have not stopped laying yet.  There was a skipped day here or there over the winter, but other than that they are doing great.
If the chickens are large breeds then it's the squirrels that had better watch out!  I only have one squirrel around and not in my yard much.  I have witnessed first hand chickens killing and eating sparrows.
How many chickens do you have?  That coup is not going to hold too many.  I do think you could up size that if you know what you are doing.
I've built 2 coups in the last year.  Both of them cost more and took twice the time I thought it would.  In the end though I have much nicer coups than I could have bought.  I have $550 into the 6' x 8' coup I built last...
I had one turkey in with my chickens and I used food grade DE in the coup.  It just helps dry things up and in the summer time that means a lot less flies.  I'm too lazy to scrape nasty poop boards.  I do the deep litter...
If you use DE make sure you get the food grade DE!  I use it and think it does help to dry things up which in turn keeps it less smelly.
