Yes, chicken are very hardy animals. They can take very cold temps. Just keep the wind off them and they will be fine. I had a free range banty live though near 0 weather and below 0 wind chills.
I had one 1 of 4 good broody for 25 days. I didn't have a rooster in with them so it was pointless. But she was a great egg warmer for those 25 days. LOL .
She will stay with them for about a month, maybe a little longer. Also, A heat lamp isn't really needed for 2 weeks old chicks thats with their mother. She will keep them warm enough.
Its not a good idea to use sawdust because of the dust. It makes it hard to breathe. Shavings make a good litter. Some people use dirt.
It isn't true. They can be togather. Them being fertile doen't change their taste.
I'm not sure but the hens eggs should be fertile for about 2 weeks.
Also, you can go here:http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/BRKPoultryPage.html#Chickens to see pics of differant breeds of chicken. They also have some info about the breed.
Some will if they have what they need.(grass, twigs, hay) Its best to provide a nest for them and keep something like shavings in it. I use old Fruit crates. Which are about 12x12x12.
Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, Wyandottes, and Australorps are all good winter layers and are hardy.
