I've had the netting up for years and the small birds fly right thru. Doves will get confused and try and fly thru it and bounce off, but usually get out thru my woven wire fence. I have never had a bird get stuck in the netting.
Mine usually start to lay at 5 to 6 months.  Or right before a show.
I've fixed crooked toes lots of times.  That method works great.  Your doing a good job.

Don't be afraid to get birds shipped to you.  Its a great way to get what you want.  99% of the time everything goes well.
Down color can vary with all the 'duck-wing' varieties.
