I clean mine every 3 months.  I have a contained system automatic waterer so it does not grow and green stuff and stays clean.  When I do clean it, I use Apple Cider Vinegar.

I agree.  The chickens like seeing their water so the cups have all of the advantages of the nipples but without the disadvantages.
It's not really worth the risk.  I would toss it out.
