Its hard to say what really happened unless you were actually observing the situation. I've never fed mine medicated feed just GBS. Not saying this was the cause. There's just too many things that can go wrong. Too much heat, not...

I've never used chick starter for Quail but I do use it on my chickens when they hatch. I feed my quail GBS from start to finish. Usually, I add some chick saver to my newly hatched quail.
I build all my coops with half inch hardware cloth so I don't have many problems with snakes. But I do have one coop that snakes can get in. I have fake ceramic eggs in it & have caught a few rat snakes that have eaten the fake...

I have this problem & personally think its a phase they go through. The reason I believe this is because my other two flocks went through this as well. Now there older & have all their feathers. Just make sure they don't draw...
Probably gonna depend on the surrounding around your coops. Places to hide, trees etc. I live on a hundred acres & my chickens stay right around there coop. Never wonder very far.
I've never used lights to extend their laying time but I know one thing I wouldn't use a heat lamp. Heat lamps cause fires. I agree with the suggestion of building a walk in coop.
I use Food Grade DE. This year I'm gonna try Benefical Nematodes as well. Lots of fire ants here.The ants can & will kill day old chicks.
