When that happened to our chickens back in germany , my grandma would just boil the whole chicken and feed it to the cats/dogs with some rice.

Yes there will be a hardware covered door for the summer. I just ran out of  the hardware cloth, thats why the top and the one door are not done yet. Dont want to waste the 1/4 in stuff i have.

How about seramas? THe tiniest of all chicken breeds, just a pound and some even smaller, you can keep 2-4 in a large guinea pig cage.
I dont actually have my chickens yet, got to wait until my hubby retires from the Army later this year . But i will put a order in as soon as he get his orders. I deceided to build the coop early so i can get them the day he retires.
