I would go with the shade for sure. 
hardware cloth is generally considered to be a better option (chicken wire is considered by many not to be predator-resistant enough)

Oh my, these people are ridiculous, and they are everywhere. I so admire people who can be respectful in the face of this, plow on, and get their way in the end. That's not me. I just hide my little chickens and keep my mouth shut. Oh...
I've  had 3 silkies for 1 year and have cleaned out their coop once just because I hadn't done it yet. It didn't smell or look bad. I do take a kitty litter spatula and scoop out the overnight poop every morning.
