My best answer is because they are chickens.   I drop a tool on the concrete and the chickens run.  I walk right next to them mowing the grass and they will hardly move out of the way.   Chris
I make sure my chickens have water all the time.  They drink quite a bit of water.  I would worry less about a shortage of food than I would about water.   Chris

My run has 6 feet tall fencing for my New Hampshire Reds.  They forage all day in a yard of 3/4 acres with 4 foot fencing and have not gotten out.  Nevertheless, my Barred Rock Rooster has gotten out of the run on occasion....
I would cut off the damaged and possibly contaminated part and prepare it as usual.   Chris
From what I have read, backyard eggs are much lower in cholesterol than store eggs.  So he has that going for him.   Chris
I would use it.   Consider your ventilation.  A glass door facing south is going to have a lot of heat gain in the summer.   Chris
