We started by measuring out and trenching right next to the tool shed. This would be the ideal place to build the coop and run, as it was within viewing distance from the back windows of the house. The footprint ended up being around 12' x 14'. We dug about 10" into hard Texas black clay to make room for the cinder blocks that would go in for the foundation. Notice that we intentionally left the oak tree running right through the middle of the run area.

We placed all studs 2' on center; turning them on their edge. We also left room on the far right corner to build the entry door for the run. We also ended up framing through the rafters, around the tree to add increased strength and durability for the roof.

Because there is water run off from the tool shed, the height of the coop closest to the shed would be higher than the far side. We settled on a 5 degree slope, calculating that it would be enough for water drainage; especially since we would end up putting gutters on the outside. The height of the side furthest away from the shed ended up being right around 7 feet tall. This should be plenty of room for an entry door and head clearance.

We then filled the cinder blocks with the dirt/clay that we had dug up, and ran chicken wire into the ground on the inside of the cinder blocks. This should be enough to deter any predators from trying to dig under the foundation.
