Pros: Hold good amount of water
Cons: Cant hang and will freeze quickly
I had this in my chicken coop but would way rather the plastic one over this because this one freezes what to fast in the winter. Because it is metal, the cold will make the metal even colder freezing the water inside. When I came out to the coop every morning to redo the water, i saw a chickens whos comb got stuck on the ice makeing the comb freeze. I would not recomend this product. Get the plastic one. :)

Looks nice but impossible to keep clean. The anti-roost design is laughable. My hens stand on it and poop down the side directly into the water. I have to wash it out entirely every day, but realistically twice daily would be better. BTW, this is not intended to be hung, which is why the handle isn't designed for it. It states this on the label.
Pros: Metal construction, doesn't promote algae growth.
Cons: Cost and handle needs to be modified to keep it from slipping to one side or the other of the handle.
Have used them for years. Durable galvanized construction, doesn't have the algae growth that the white plastic waterers are prone to producing. They are a bit pricey though.

I don't like it either, but for the opposite reason. It dries up with water still inside, and it won't hang level. A crook in the handle would have solved this problem. It should also have a pin on both sides so the base attaches more securely to the tank. It isn't cheap, and ain't worth the money!

It does work well and keeps the water clean. Just don't add ACV, or dent it, making it difficult to open or close.

I've got two of this type that I have owned and used for 40 years. Both of them are still going strong. I call that "Durable."
Not pushing the top all the way down into the water will also cause it to leak.
When setting on slightly uneven ground, position the water outlet hole on the down hill side. Don't carry a full can of water with the top installed. Replace the top when you get to where you want the waterier, (refer to the first sentence)

No vinegar, nothing but plain well water in both of them. I do give the feathery ones vinegar but it is in their outside plastic tub, never in steel.

Like Ms. diva said, something attacked the galvanizing. Either that or one wasn't galvanized as well as it should be.
If you want to paint the insides of the one drinking fountain look into a product called Kam Coat or maybe it is spelled Cam Coat. Anyway, good luck.

I just got one yesterday. It does take some getting used too. The sticker says not to hang them??? And don't put vinegar in the water. Wish I had read that at the store.

Ha! That will teach me to not read the stickers! We had help selecting these at the store back when we were just getting started with chickens (we bought the 5 gallon size), and were told they could be hung, and I didn't bother reading the label. Nothing about the hanging of them caused them to fail while we were using them, though getting them to hang straight took a bit of problem solving. I'm wondering why the sticker says not to hang them. Waterers that don't hang are endlessly frustrating in my experience.

It should be OK for the ducks. WOW are they ever messy. They don't even seem to drink the water, it just goes flying everywhere. They're like those sprinklers that go pht-pht-pht-pht, blblblblblblblblbl, pht-pht-pht-pht, blblblblblblblblblbl. Oh, well, I have well water as well, so long as it doesn't rust. P.S. Don't get ducks. P

Yes, I only buy the 5 gallon ones - I have had a horrible time with the 2 gallon ones leaking constantly...couldn't use them after awhile. I have tried FOUR of the 2 gallon ones, all gone now. I have four 5 gallon ones and they are all great.

We have used these for several years, but ours hang. I agree, they must be level, or they will run out the side. But, properly hung, or positioned on a level surface, they have been great for us.

You must be using it wrong as these were the standard in chicken waters way before all the cool plastic ones and nipples and water cups. Check it real closely and see if you have a hole in the top outer part that is allowing air into the waterer. Once the drinking section fills with water the only way it is supposed to get more water is if the level drops enough that a little air gets in and allows a little water to escape so the only way it can run over is if it is getting air into the water chamber unexpectily. Take you top and turn it upside down and fill it with water if it leaks out it should show you where the air is getting in--plug up the air leak with some epoxy or maybe some wax and a little duct tape. If you continue to have problems with it send it to me as I would be glad to have another for my collection!

We have two of these water containers and my only con is that if it's snowing the water will freeze, even under cover, and in the summer when it's hot, 100 degrees, the water does get warm, even when placed under their coop. Other than that they are ok.

I don't know of any water containers for poultry (home use) that will heat the water in winter and cool it in the summer.
I have 3 of these units and they all work just fine. For the winter you can buy a heating unit that the container sits on and it will keep it from freezing.

I am new so I don't know this would work, but maybe you could use a plastic feeder for water as they are harder to spill? Just an idea, maybe not even a good one - lol!

I carry this type of waterer upside down... I need two hands to carry it, but there is less spilling : )

I have the same type waterer, and instructions say not to carry by the handle when full.

I carry a bucket of water to fill it.
