Pros: Easy to fill, never froze, no leaks/spilling

Cons: Can't see water level

This has been a lifesaver, living in the midwest. Last year we used the heated plastic waterer and it was a source of constant frustration. I dreaded changing it out every time. It seemed that more times than not, the base would come loose and water would spill all over the coop, requiring removal of bedding and fresh shavings to be put down.

This year, we bought this with the heated base-what a difference! It is easy to carry to the pump, fill and set back up-with OUT ever having water spill everywhere in the coop!

Temps reached -20 and never had issues with it freezing either.

Pros: Metal 'seems' like it would be sturdier and longer lasting

Cons: Leaks, rusted out.

When I started with chickens, I bought these in several sizes, from 2-5 gallon. The bottom dish parts got bent more easily in storage than you would expect from a metal product. They would sometimes leak and run continuously, wetting bedding, and in one case, drowning chicks. After a few years, they rusted out, despite being galvanized. Expensive, but junk nonetheless.

Pros: Sturdy

Cons: Must be heated, rusts, must be raised off ground

The biggest issue is that the hens will poop in it if it is not raised off of the ground. It also rusts quickly. But it is a nice sturdy waterer. Much better than the makeshift bucket we were using.

Pros: durable, strong, and holds a ton

Great a whole lot more durable than the plastic one that broke on me less than week.

Pros: Strong, lasts through the weather.

Cons: Spot welded handle came off

Great product, after a year I bought a second one.

Advice, put it up on Blocks to prevent chicken from scratching dirt and poop into it.

I have not yet bought a heat plate for it but, I plan to this winter.

Spot welled handle came off but it is still a great product.

Pros: Easy to fill

Cons: Poorly made

We have 5 of these that we have purchased over the last 2 or 3 years. The rubber stopper doesn't seat well over the hole, so the unit must be assembled while carrying it or the water will spill all over the ground (and your legs).  This is an awkward way to carry it.  One of them leaks while I fill it even when I try to seat the rubber piece first.  While I agree with furbabymum that I feel like I am wasting my money, I haven't found a good product.  If I were in manufacturing, I would never consider putting such a shoddy product on the market.

On the up side, I have tried plastic waterers and I like the concept of this one.  No threads to cross, no turning upside down to fill it.

Pros: Easy to fill

Cons: Leaks

I hate this waterer. It leaks. This is the 3rd waterer I've bought so I'm just dealing with it but I'm not happy about it. I've used a level to make sure it's going on level ground. I've got it on a cement pad outside of the coop because it kept leaking and destroying the coop bedding. I really dislike this thing.

Pros: Easy to fill

Cons: Can't see water level

I had been using the plastic type 5 gallon waterers, but my grip is failing and I had a hard time opening those. On top of that, I get wet capping the outlet and uncapping it, and backwash pulls waste into the tank.  I saw one of these vaccum seal ones, and got it to try.  So much easier to open and fill.  Only downside is that I can't see the water level, but that's not a big issue.  It only takes a moment to check them.  An additional bonus is they don't backwash into the tank like the plastic ones do, so the water stays cleaner.  I'll be slowly replacing all of them.  In the meantime, my other half maintains the harder-to-use screw top ones.
