Rosecomb

Originally shown as "Africans" in 1849 at the first Boston Show, the heritage of the rosecomb bantam has since been disputed. Now rosecombs are thought to have originated in Britain as they have the earliest recorded history of the breed dating back to 1493 when King Richard III took a fancy to the birds and began raising them. These tiny chickens are true bantams, not created from down-sizing a larger version. They are strictly ornamental fowl and have been a long time favorite among show breeders and usually turn out in large numbers at the poultry shows. Their proud stature, elegant lines, and dignified look will captivate an audience and has kept the breed quite popular among poultry fanciers for hundreds of years.

i have 19, 2 adults and 17 chicks born within the past month. They are really friendly and they tend to hang out with their own kind. They are pretty good egg layers considering their size. They were my first chickens ever and I"m still wanting more>bow.gif

Pros: Very alert, hens are very good broodies, Cocks take very good care of their hens
Cons: Can be flighty

These are just the best bantams ever!! Very alert, and proud.  A true bantam, no large fowl in this breed.  Lots of colors, some are still in development.  One of the best birds to learn to show with.  Breeders out their are very helpful.  Very cold hardy with the rosecomb, and make wonderful pets.

Pros: Nice layer, GREAT mothers, sweet boys
Cons: none!

Cold hardy with the rose comb, some of the best broodies I've ever had! Every rooster was a cute, talkative, gentleman that took excellent care of his girls. The hens were reliable layers of little white eggs.

Good foragers, good fliers.

Breed Details:

These birds have been a pleasure to raise. Rosecombs take a considerable amount of time to mature and feather out but the reward is well worth the wait for a gorgeous bird. The hens make excellent broodies and the roosters are gentle fathers. The breed tends to be more flighty than my docile cochins but they are in no way mean or aggressive as they are sometimes thought to be. Rosecombs are great foragers and will feed themselves very well when left to free range. They are also good flyers and love to perch up high and belt out a crow to show everyone what powerful little birds they are. These tiny bantams are packed full of personality. They talk to eachother constantly and the rosecomb rooster is always the first to spot a would be predator and let out his warning call. Everyone who stops by my home is impressed with this breed. The rosecomb is a true show stopper.
