I have got four Bresse pullets, who are now 17 weeks old. Three have got lovely combs and wattles, but one has got virtually nothing. I have put a picture of her, and one of her sisters as my avatar so people can see it - the non-comb one is looking at the camera, but you can still see how little she has got. She is also definitely the lowest in pecking order now, although she used to stand up to them all and I think be second.

Is this at all 'normal' (whatever normal is!) for chickens this age? Will she get a full comb and wattle set? Will she lay eggs do you think?

As a sideline, what sort of age does this breed start laying - anyone got any experience of them?

Just worrying slightly... !

Hmmm, I would think she will lay just fine, but I would question how pure a bird is she? Where did you get them? I read the Greenfire article on them and they are pretty dang pricey. whew!

I would not use her eggs for future chicks, as she is not standarded.

Are you doing the pasturing and the diet before butchering?

Thanks for replying. I am in the UK, and got them all from a local breeder. These four are for just eggs, since this is my first tie with chickens - I am planing on getting others in a couple of years' time for both meat and eggs.

Hmmm...hard to say.

Could be a mix...or could just be an anomaly.

Might just have to wait and see.
