My three soon to be four week old chicks are really in to flying. I've had my smallest clear a three foot stretch.. They also seem to like to fly at each other, and peck each other a lot. This is only when I have them out of their box from what I've seen.

Ok, so what is your concern??? do you want them to not fly.. Clip their flite feathers. They will grow back soon, so do it again..
Different varieties are more flighty than others. Maybe you have the more flighty type. I personally like flighty chickens, because they are capable of better escapes from predators. About a month ago that capability saved one of my chicken's life. My chickens luv me, so none try to fly to escape from me. =D=D=D
WISHING YOU BEST.

You've discovered chicks love to engage in low-level flight! I've been hammering away on this forum trying to get folks to consider taking their babies outside for "field trips" as early as possible on nice days, even if they still need heat.

The transformation of chicks from the confinement of a brooder box to a broad stretch of space outside is a marvel to behold.

That most people believe chicks need to be confined to a brooder until they're well over a month old is misinformed and deprives both chicks and humans from experiencing unbelievable freedom and joy.

I've started taking mine out on the bed, or out in the yard, sometimes sticking them in a dog crate. I was just curious if this was normal lol

My chicks are only 10 days old and a couple of them want to jump out. I'm afraid if I put them in the yard that I won't be able to catch them to put them back, or the trauma will be too much.

Mine are 3 weeks old, do i have to vaccinate them against gumboro virus? am yet to do that. But they're doing good, 75 of them. they only have signs of bacterial infectoin, coccidiosis.

I thought

I thought that as well, but at five weeks, you just have to find out how to entice them. They won't go too far from you if they like ya

The bouts of playing you are noticing are particularly evident with birds that have been confined as it is a mechanism to promote exercise. Those free-range reared by hen will do the same although keeping up with mother provides most of the needed exercise. Larger groups are more likely to engage in the play as the activity is "contagious" like yawning.

It's fun to watch! I was just hoping it was helpful and not harmful. I've been trying to get them out and exercised at least in the room they're staying in til we get our coop up and running.
