Morning Noises

Since our new flock has finally grown up, they have a tendency to make atrocious noises in the morning around 7:00 to 9:00 am. Since we live in an urban setting, I am afraid that someone will call animal control. Chickens are allowed in our city-just not roosters. Sometimes they are just as loud as roosters. We normally try and quiet them down with a little treat but sometimes it gets out of control. Any tips on how to control?

I am having this exact problem. I even created an account just to post about this so I could get some advice.

I have found, just in the last 2 days, that covering their windows to not allow light in until I want to let them out helps tremendously. A few days ago they were waking me up before 6 AM, they were so loud - in their coop. Now they have left me sleep until 8 or 8:go for two mornings in a row.

I used weed cloth that I had left over - the black fiber kind - and put four layers on the inside of the window. It cute down on the light but allows air to circulate.

Maybe that will help you too.

I suppose cutting their light down as suggested might work for keeping them quiet,
but it could also effect their laying development/production.....and adequate ventilation is important too.
4 layers of weed block is a significant decrease in air flow.

Another Romance meets Reality aspect of chicken keeping:
All chickens can be very loud, not just the crowing males.
Sometimes it's maddening, but that's just how they do.

I assume you are referring to a lot of singing. Personally I love to hear mine sing but I do live out in the country so theres really no threat for them disturbing anyone. Of course I also have a rooster and love hearing him crow as well. If it is the early morning singing you are worrying about don't think I would let that bother me too much. Likely its not bothering your neighbors as much as you worry.

My Ginger girl does the same thing! She squawks starting at 5:45am until I let them out of the run! I get up at 6:00 or as soon as I hear her. Then, sometimes she goes off while my other hen is laying her egg. I think it's funny, but I do try to keep her quiet in the early morning by getting up and letting them out. We have 5 all together, but she is the vocal one.

My four can go in and out of the coop to the secured run no problem, it is the 5:30 AM egg song that can really startle the suburban neighborhood, especially now with the nice weather, most people's windows are opened. I feel bad for one particular backyard neighbor whose bedroom window is the closest to the coop, she has to put up with the "Marco" "Polo" egg songs every morning. I give her fresh eggs whenever I see her in the backyard to make it up. Also, If my girls sees me that I am home, they would squawk even more to get my attention, so I have to keep the window blinds down (hiding from my chickens). Most of the time it is "Orange", she whines all day non stop, the other ones are much more quiet. If the chickens can chirp like spring birds, that would be much more pleasant, but they don't.

I would hesitate to give them treats to quiet them down in the morning. They might just start expecting them and squawk all the more and louder impatiently waiting to get fed. I've made sure to never, ever, ever let them out of their run in the morning as a response to their noise. Once they get the idea that making noise will get them what they want, all hope is lost.

x2 on the curtains.

Yes- light control helps!

Hens are noisy too, no way around it. The egg song is loud, as well.
