Hi all!

My name is Susan and I just signed up. I have so many questions!! I am new to chickens... about 6 weeks now. I have 12 LegBar hens and 1 LegBar rooster. I LOVE THEM!!! I have had ducks for 15 years and love them too. I have 9 female Swedish Blues....but chickens are much easier!!

My chickens and ducks free range during the day in a 100x100 fenced yard. They will be in the "barn" at night.

I am getting a 12x8 regular shed. I like calling it 'the barn'...it sounds more farmer-like.
We will retro fit it with a chicken door, nesting boxes and roosting poles.

Front, 12foot side will have double doors and 1 window. I will have two 12' x 6" vents that i can put anywhere.

on the (8foot) left wall I will have the roosting poles and on the opposite 8 foot wall, I will have the nesting boxes.

Our winters seldomly get into the teens during the day or night....almost never below zero.

Question: Should the vents be over the roosting poles and nesting boxes? or Can they be on the back 12 foot wall opposite the doors and window?

Thank you in advance!

Hi :welcome Susan

Glad you could join the flock! Lovely to hear you are enjoying your new chickens. I've not kept legbar but they are a lovely breed. As for your vents, yes certainly above the roosts and nest boxes. As any moisture from the birds breath and poop should rise it's best to have them higher. Ventilation is very important in any coop for air flow. Draft free but plenty of ventilation is best. Here is the section on housing your chickens from the learning centre ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/housing-and-feeding-your-chickens

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

Thank You!
We are in Southern New Jersey and about 35 minutes from the coast, so we
luckily don't get the colder and snowier winter weather that North Jersey gets.
