As I have had a lot of advice on my chicken breeds on here I have discovered I am the owner of two Cornish X and 6 golden laced wyandottes. One rooster out of my Cornish X and 1 rooster out of my GLW. I am upset because I wanted them for eggs (and pets at this point! :) ) and not meat birds! (Tractor supply wasn't too helpful when I bought my pullets)
That would leave me with my 5 GLW for eggs! Has anyone ever kept Cornish x for eggs? That would give me one more chicken..! They are pretty hefty now and it makes me a bit sad to think.... :fl

It is possible to keep them alive long enough to lay eggs, but if you haven't had them on a strict diet and exercise program, it's not likely that your will live that long. They need to be managed very carefully if you intend to keep them around past 8 or 10 weeks. They need daily encouragement to move around and be active. They need to be kept on a strict twice a day feeding schedule, as well, to help slow their rapid growth. Even under the best of circumstances, they rarely live longer than a year or so.

I have a three year old Cornish X. She lays good, and her eggs are huge. As a chick, she was kept on a strict two times daily feeding schedule, and still is. Meat birds shouldn't be allowed constant access to as much food as they want, they'll eat themselves to death. If you monitor their intake, they should be fine.
As for your cornish roo, I'm sure he'd be a great pet! But I wouldn't eat him. Of course...I wouldn't eat anybody...

Here's my big girl :)
So, I think your hen shwould be a decent layer if you make sure she doesn't over eat.

Yes I have recently cut down their intake and fruit and veggie treats even more... For a while I thought I was dealing with white leghorns until they started getting awful big and lumpy! I will try to let them free range more often with more water access throughout the day. He likes to lay down to eat already.. :/
