I have a buff rock pullets she about 5-6 months and I've been told that Cochins go broody but I want to know when. Do they go broody once she lays eggs or will I have to wait?

In my experience, girls often go broody with-in their first year. However, sometimes they wait until their second, depending on when they were hatched (spring or fall). They don't usually go broody right after they start laying, they will wait a few weeks to a few months, until they find a safe place, often with a nice clutch of eggs (I had one hen go broody on a piece of corn cob, however). It really depends on the individual.
I have three broodies right now, two of which are over a year and a half old and another who is just a year old and is a first timer.

Best of luck!

Howdy IBPerez

I have a bantam Cochin who went broody at 8 months and another who went broody at 7 months.

One of my bantam Cochins (3yo) goes broody after she has laid 10-12 eggs. So, if she is broody and I break her, when she returns to laying, she lays 10-12 eggs and then broody again. If I let her hatch some eggs, 10-12 eggs after returning to laying, she is broody!
