Somewhere Over the Rainbow
It's been two days since both my roos had bumblefoot surgery (they are both 5 months old). We don't have avian vets where I live, so our surgical nurse neighbor removed both bumbles.

Their feet are wrapped. How do we clean their wounds now? Do I take the bandages off every 24-48hrs?

Then how do I clean the wounds? Betadine, Bannixx, (our pet store didn't have any vereimycin, and recommended bannixx as an alternative) or do I just unbandage, add new gauze with antibiotic ointment, and re-bandage without cleaning or wetting the skin?

I'm at a loss! There's lots of info on how to perform the surgery, but not detailed instructions for wound aftercare. I may be immensely overthinking this, but having these birds have changed (and saved) my life. Please help!

Disclaimer: I am a very new and freaked out chicken momma. I have only been chicken keeping for 5 months. I'm still learning.

I forgot to mention that we took off the wrappings 24hrs after surgery, soaked their feet in betadine, sprayed them with Bannizz, applied non-adhesive gauze with triple antibiotic cream, and rewrapped their feet with vetrap.

We used peroxide and neosporin without pain meds. After we cleaned it we wrapped it with vet wrap. It clings, and is easy to remove. We used bandage tape around that to make sure it stayed put and within a week or so it was almost completely healed.

How long do we do this routine? The soaking, rebandaging, etc.? Everyday? For how many days?
They're still open wounds, will the soaking and the antibiotic ointment disrupt a scab from forming? At what point do we stop changing the dressings everyday? My husband said they will need dry bandages soon. Whatever that means.

See what I meant about over thinking this? I have three adolescent children that always had illnesses and injuries - but this chicken stuff freaks me out!

I would clean it today, let it dry and leave it covered for 24 hours. Then I would air it out for a few hours to make sure it's clean and re-wrap. I'd check it daily, but after a few days I would leave it uncovered so it doesn't always stay moist. If it's clean it should heal just fine. I'd say we kept ours covered maybe a week and a half.

Both roos had very large kernels/cores down in there, so they are missing a lot of the pads of their feet. It just seems so, like, gaping - like a gaping hole. They were deep too. I haven't smelled any odors, or see any odd discharge.

This has been a huge emotional drain. I need to just slow down, breathe, and follow your advice.

Thank you, BayBayPeepers for your help; I appreciate it immensely.

No problem, it's easy to stay calm from the outside. I was the same way

sounds like you're doing a great job. Keep it up and they'll be just fine.
