Egg laying had been disrupted due to a couple of broody hens. We just figured the others weren't laying. Today while squirrel hunting I stumbled across 18 eggs in a shallow depression in the yard. Some were so rotten that they exploded when I tossed them into the compost bin.

Time to either scour the rest of the property for other nests... again or build a fenced in run for a while so the chickens remember where to lay the eggs.

Oh I love finding big piles of eggs in the garden, it's like a pot of gold...except of course when they are all rotten, yuck indeed!
Also the amazing places they manage to hide their treasures.

Did you throw them all out already? You can test if they are all good to eat by placing them in a bucket of water. If any eggs float then you can throw them out (they are filled with gas) and those that sink are fine.

With fixing this problem Ive found that you must block entrance to the nest site and yes, pen them in for several days to a week to make sure they begin laying in the desired nests.

To ensure that this doesn't happen again, or too often, try making your nest boxes as desirable as possible by making sure they are cool, away from drafts, in a dark and quiet place and have enough boxes for your hens, even if they do all just want the same box haha.
