Hi! I am fairly new to chicken parenting. ;) I have (had) a flock of 12 birds. 1 rooster and 3 hens around 8 months that always stick together, then a gaggle of "babies" around 3-4 months that hang out separately. They all free-range on our 11 acres but always choose to hang out in a fairly small area near the coop/house (easier to beg for treats that way). My rooster and one hen went missing last night. Never showed up at the coop. And no sign of them today. We've walked a pretty wide circle and there's not even a feather anywhere. My roo is friendly, would come to my call, and crowed loudly and often. And he was BIG - I don't think there is any way a bird got him. What might have gotten TWO chickens at virtually the same time and left no trace whatsoever?

I'm a sad chicken mama. :(

Sorry for your loss. Predators are feeding their growing young right now. Sounds like the work of 'snatch and grab' predators - fox, coyotes, bobcat. Be careful with the rest of your flock. It/they will return.

Same thing happened to me tonight not a sight of them no feathers very large roo very protective puzzeled looking everywhere

So sad. I know this is the risk of free-ranging. But it stinks!!!! Blk - sorry you're going through the same thing. :(

I too live in central NC the Uwharrie NF and because of the new threat of bear and other teethy critters I rarely let my chickens roam far.Still have all 5 and let them cut up in the woods but lock them up tight just after 8pm.Hate to hear about that.Thats my worst fear living in these dense woods. They can have ole roaster.Gotta have eyes in the back of your head around him.

this happened to me yesterday i arrived home saw the fox leaned on the horn and it took off4 pullets i had found one in the barn hiding they all used to hide in bushes etc there is no sign of my other 3 no feathers how would one fox carry away 3 pullets

If left uninterrupted, Fox will move in and kill as many chickens as it's able and then return for each and cache. So sorry for your losses.
