hen's voice seems off...

today is day 2 on tylan. she doesnt seem to have improved, in fact, i would say the crackling to her breath seems louder. her wattles are still very red, and eyes are clear, but she is still sneezing, has nasal discharge, and crackling. shes seems to be tired more often now, and doesnt eat nearly as much as before. maybe tylan isnt working?

Give it at least another 24 hours - antibiotics need a bit of time to work.

The problem with infections is that it is very difficult to know exactly what antibiotic to give unless you get them tested by a vet.

If she doesn't improve soon you may need to consider tube feeding to keep her fluid levels up, and getting her to a vet asap to get her tested and put on more specific antibiotics.

well theres good news. since last night shes been acting much better, and doesnt have the crackles or sniffles anymore. her nasal area is clean and she has been much more active. for her she seemed to get worse before she got better. yesterday morning was the worst, and she was just sleeping, sneezing, and breathing so loud you could hear her across the room, and then for some reason by nighttime she perked up completely and the symptoms more of less went away. anyway, just glad that shes feeling better!

im still keeping a close eye on her in case she has a relapse or something. how soon can i put her back with everyone else?

Keep up the antibiotics - you need a minimum of 5 days, preferably 7 days treatment. There's a huge risk that if you stop them too soon there will be a few bacteria that haven't been killed off, and they will come back with a vengeance, and be resistant to the antibiotics.

Unless you can guarantee to separate her from the others once a day and give her the medication, keep her on her own for the full 7 days. Even if she looks better and wants to get back with the flock you won't be doing her any favours unless you can be certain to give her the full treatment.

I am so glad that she is getting better!

i will definitely keep her on antibiotics until at least 5 days. i know antibiotics need to run their full course, otherwise we risk creating superbugs and resistance. i am just glad she is back to her regular self! shes always looking at my hands now to see if i giver her any treats. she loves grapes and so i always give her a couple each time we are done with her shots.

I'm so glad she's looking better

Once she's finished the antibiotics and you put her back with the flock it would be good to give them some probiotic yogurt. All your chickens should love a treat like that and it will help restore the good bacteria in your sick girl's gut.

Thank you for posting the update. A lot of times folks don't do that and those of us, like me! :( , with a favorite hen in that situation all of a sudden, benefit from the whole story. Glad she improved. I started antibiotics and hope mine does too.
