Hanibal my year old Embden goose eats the cooked steak scraps I toss out to my chickens in fact he will fight them off so he can get to the choicest bits. He refuses to eat bugs or worms but will eat any leftovers tossed to him. Should I be worried? I asked a veterinarian and a pair of people at the Denver zoo and all three gave me horrified and confused looks. Really should I be worried?

Well...with a name like Hanibal...Lol

Is he grazing or getting some form of pellet feed too? I'm no expert, but I'd think as long as the meat scraps aren't his whole diet, it shouldn't be a problem? My goose begs for and eats "people" treats too, even things like hot dogs, or sausage from pizza! I think some geese are just weird (lol) and develop a taste for certain things. At least it's food he's eating and not the siding off your house like other geese have been known to do! All in all, I'd say if he's happy and healthy, and has a balanced diet and grazes for greens, occasional people treats shouldn't be a problem. But, we'll see what the experts here say!

Sometimes they get greedy. There are many food items that my goose will scoff at if offered to her, but if she sees the ducks eating it, she will push them out of the way and steal it.

I wonder...are they really strict vegetarians if they eat bugs and worms? I guess some are just weird! Cas wants to try anything I'm eating, whether its "good" for him or not! Doesn't seem to matter what it is either, but if Mom is eating it then he wants some too! His current favorite thing is cheese! LOL

Sounds like Pear, earlier today he JUMPED in the air and snatched a grape out of my hand while I was sitting on the ground. Little devil ;)

Haha! Or stucco!!!

I don't think geese should be encouraged to eat anything that is not a plant as it would mess with the bacteria in their gut. However on occasion they do eat insects or mushrooms.

Are you sure your goose is eating enough? Does he have access to grass during the day?

I toss grass in to him as well but he also gets chicken feed and he gets to forage on our property every other day. I feel better about letting him out to run around than I do my chickens. Hannibal can't disappear after all he's a big white goose. The scraps I toss in are usually also composed of leftover salad and/or baked potatoes. I don't mean to give Hannibal the meat but he lives with my chickens and unless I want to lock him out or chase him away from the meat I don't really see any way to stop him eating it. Yesterday I tossed the bone of a steak in and he not only fought the chickens away from it but grabbed it and twisted off a hunk the size the end of my thumb which he then "chewed" and swallowed.
