Today while letting my 5 chix free range a two greyhounds ran into my yard totally unexpected. I was sitting right next to them. They all scattered but one was caught by dog. She was badly injured and we had to put her down.

The other four flew/ran towards the woods. My two leghorns made it up to tree branches and came right back when things calmed down. These chix are 3 months old. The other two Red Rangers are too heavy to make it up a tree and they ran off.
I've searched for them but haven't found them. Does anyone have experience of their chix coming back home?
If they don't make it back soon I'm sure a fox or something will get them.
We had been feeling so fortunate since we started this venture in April and had have no predator problems. My neighbor didn't even know we had chix bc our back yard is set back from everyone else. His dogs just took off and came straight to my backyard.
I hope they will return..........

How long have they been gone?

When this happened to us.....and sadly it was our own dog that chased them into our fields.....they came back by roosting time. As long as the danger is gone they seem to have an instinctual sense of direction where to roost. However, the Greyhounds could have chased them a long way.

When I feed my chickens I always call them saying "Chick Chick Chick" as I go........they can hear me a long way off and always come running. Do you do anything like that when you feed your chickens? If you do go into the fields and call them, make sure you have some feed with you so that you can coax them to follow you back home.

I hope you showed your neighbour the injured chicken and that he made overtures to pay for it.

Great news. They came home to roost!!! I went down to coop about half hour before they roost and sat on my swing. My coop seemed so empty w/o my other three hens. I sat there reading and whispered a prayer that if they were alive they would find the way back.
Then I heard their beautiful sounds!!! I looked up and here they were waltzing along like nothing happened. Needless to say I was thrilled.

My neighbor felt so bad about what happened. He has offered to buy me as many as I want to replace my pullet. He had no idea we even had chix back there. Not sure when I will let them out again. It happened in a flash.

Thanks for your response.

Glad your birds made their way back home. I'm sorry you lost one to the dogs. Maybe some good fencing is in order before you let them out in the yard again? Nice of your neighbor to try to make it up to you.

I'm so glad that they got back home safe and sound. Greyhounds are sight driven. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Its nice of your neighbor to want to replace your girl. I'm sure he feels so bad about the attack from his dogs. Stay safe now.

What a terrifying experience that must have been. Who would expect a brace of greyhounds to show up and scatter your birds? Okay I believe your neighbor was sorry BUT,now that he knows you have chickens lets see what happens with his dogs next time. I know greyhounds need exercise but, it's foolish for him to let them run free.
I have heard that because they run so fast and far, they can't even find their way home. They are sight hounds not scent hounds - can't even track their own scent.
