So to reiterate, it sounds like OP was talking about plants and that animals are pretty much universally listed male fist. So the only reason we have to clarify really is for disgruntled botanists. :)

But also for the uninitiated who didn't know anyone even has a protocol for what's listed first. Even in the dog world I see folks listing them backwards. Everyone is new at one time or another, and they have to learn everything from scratch.
