Worming

Red Devil lye was easy to administer, really. Half way fill a 55 gallon drum with corn, fill it full of water and let it sit over night. Then the next day add one tablespoon of Red Devil lye to it and stir it with a boat paddle. Let it sit for another couple of days, then feed it to the hogs. That was before there were wormers at our feed store. Then the price of corn shot up through the roof when we stopped selling corn to the commie Russians. Then it was time sell the piglets and a couple of sows, the rest went to the butcher.

Now that wormers are available and worms/eggs are ALWAYS prevalent in the soil, and it's natural for animals to pick up worm eggs...thank goodness there are wormers to get rid of parasites.

I'd like to highlight part of what you said there but I'm not an expert at quoting and misquoting people lol... And the fact that some miss...THE SOIL. How many times must I repeat this lol... Yes, there are ALWAYS some sort of worm egg in the soil...as there are ALWAYS some type of worm in the intestine. The concentration of wormers put into an animal not only knocks out production from withdrawal, but makes my whole operation completely invalid if I didn't know what the soil cycle is... The article you posted pretty much nailed how an organic producer gets away with not worming. TIMING AND CLEAN SOIL.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This farm has been here for over 100 years, so have worms. So have sheep cattle horses goats alpacas chickens geese ducks donkeys cats dogs probably mice...... But we keep the SOIL healthy and we are very aware of how the cycle works.

We are also very aware of how PNSBs and EMs and organic chemicals work...as well as the ph of digestive systems.

Closed herd, EMs, PH, and soil health, without killing the dung beetles that we need to get rid of the poo in the pastures.

No wormers. Never will be. An epidemic of worms would end with me culling and moving the coop to a new "pasture".

Once all THAT is studied, really the insanity of cycling wormers will become apparent ;)

BTW, grandpa, who knows best(who is also a retired Agronomy professor), is the one who also called the shot NOT to worm the cattle or chickens. It's pointless because they are closed herd. Waste if money, grandpa's words ;)

And lastly, the glitter comments make me feel like I'm watching a 3rd grade bully session... I'm sure penicillin looked really stupid coming from a moldy orange but who looks stupid now? Enough, its really immature and makes people look very ignorant.

When on earth did we compare glitter and penicillin? Are you insinuating that glitter would make an effective addition to wormers? I'm sure there are a few people who were participating in this thread at one time who would agree with you! ;)

If you read back in the thread, you'll see what all the fuss is about. I would say it's almost become a beloved inside joke.

Since I hate for people to be "ignorant," I highly recommend reading the posts made by Eradicator.

I'm closing this thread as I'm sure that the OP has gotten the info. they need by now.

Seriously, some of you really need to think about your posting style; you catch more flies with honey, and all that jazz.

There is NO reason that ANYONE ought to be as rude as some of the comments in this thread were.

BYC was intended as a place for folks to gather and chat online in a RESPECTFUL way. If you find you just cannot be kind, please move on and DO NOT POST.

I will add that some of you have had communication from me on this. Some more than once.

It is not in the BYC Spirit to be unkind or to make fun of someone who was not born with all knowledge Chicken as apparently some of you were.

We were all new once and we all have needed help. And if you are too busy, impatient or knowledgeable to bother with these types of posts, then just do not respond. That would be the most helpful thing to do.
