Duckling won't stand, walks poorly

I also have a two week old crested Indian runner that I hatched that is having problems with walking without tumbling over. I noticed the crop is pretty big. She eats and drinks good but she just wants to lay around. Could someone help please!

Hi!

So, what does the little one eat, and is there food with water available 24/7? Brooder temperature? Are you supplementing with B vitamins of any kind?

Other ducklings or ducks?

Hi!

Other ducklings or ducks?
I give it dumor chick starter, no other vitamins. There is water and food at all times. I have it in a plastic tote with s brooder light not sure what the temp is. I have no other ducks with it. When it stands it falls over on its left side. Took it to the vet he didn't know if it was neurological from lack of supplements or other. He gave me a powder to mix with warm water to give the duck four times a day along with the regular food and told me don't get your hopes up if it doesn't get better.

I would love to know what's in the powder, because this sounds like B vitamin deficiency, and I have seen dozens of cases over the last six years of ducklings with lameness and seizures recovering after being given B vitamin supplementation.

Does it have B vitamins in it?

I checked their web site - I did not find any reference to B vitamins.

I would ask the vet if it is okay for you to give a B-Complex vitamin in addition to the emeraid omnivore, since many many cases like this show improvement within a week (sometimes less) with supplementation of B vitamins either with B-Complex, brewer's yeast, nutritional yeast or even plain niacin.

Really. I feel it is very important to supplement with the B vitamins.

thanks, I read the ingredients, it does have B12 in it. When I took the duck I was telling him about niacen and brewers yeast he told me that it would not do anything for the duck. The duckling is still the same, he eats and drinks water. I've been giving him the omnivore supplement and he slurps it up. He was hatched 24 Aug, a little over two weeks old, I feel he is not growing like he should. He does have a creast on top of his head and looks like a spot on the side of his eye is a little creast. The vet took a sample of his poop, it came back negative for what ever they were looking for. I feel so bad for the little guy, he trys to get up and trys to walk and just falls over on his left side and just thrashing trying to get up right. I hope its not a neurological thing where nothing can be done, I am praying that the supplements will do the trick. Thanks for responding.

I am not a vet, and working with a good duck vet is best.

At the same time, not trying to tell you to argue with the vet, if there is no harm in doing so, if it were me (long bunch of disclaimers here!), I would be at least adding 150 mg of vitamin B3, which is plain niacin, per gallon of drinking water. And that is straight out of Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks, pages 258 and 259, first edition.

I had a chat with myself before posting this. Because the tone seems a bit strident for me. I respect you, and your vet. And sometimes - as often as anybody - I guess wrong. So in all humility, I would feel irresponsible if I did not make this last pitch for niacin, and the duck continued to have troubles. Okay, I'll sit down now, and pray for complete recovery.

I agree... I hate to contradict what a vet says, but chick starter is not formulated for ducklings. I also have a crested duck doing the same thing, so I'm trying extra B's with him to see if it helps.
