Help. My neighbor initially was fine with my chickens free ranging. They have been going in their yard eating their bugs. I spoke with him in the past and he didnt mind. Now he is all bent out of shape. He said that his dog (who is always in the house or is on a chain) is a breed that kills birds and he doesnt want him getting the taste of birds. I get that. But my chickens pretty much stay away from her. Ugh. He said i need to figure out something else then to have them free range during the day. He was quite rude about it and i am struggling to not be mad. He has the right to not have them in his yard. We can't really fence in our yard. It is a rental. But i dont know what to do. We have a hoop coop that is about 8x8 with 8 chickens...6 hens 2 roosters. I am struggling. We dont have the money for a bigger coop really. I havent wanted to clip their wings because they can get away from predators and such easier. But i dont know what to do. Thoughts?

Clipping their wings will not keep them from walking into their yard... sounds like your only option for now is to only do supervised free ranging... stay with them when they are out and don't let them go in his yard...

Time to invest in some fencing for a run. Or look into making a chicken tractor so you can move them around your yard. If you can't do either of those your only option is to only let them out when you can watch them.

Your neighbor may 'sound' rude because he is worried about his dog eating your chickens.....
Or he may have discovered that he's not be fond of chicken poop in his yard.
.....and maybe staying on good terms with you as a neighbor. Not all folks communicate well.

It is your responsibility to keep your animals confined to your property and off other peoples property.
Another 'Romance meets Reality' story in the backyard chicken realm.

Agrees that investing in some run fencing is needed.

Yep, make a tractor! You can move it every day or two to keep them on fresh grass. Check the Coop and Run section of the forum. There are lots of ideas there and many are made by simply using things folks already have laying around or scored for free off the internet, ect.

Good luck!

You'd be surprised how much free fencing material you can get. Post an ad on Craigslist, or other online or even physical bulletin board. People often have junk like that laying around, wanting to get around to getting rid of it and then finally someone like you helps them do that!

Yep, I bet your neighbor didn't realize how messy and destructive chickens can be and is blaming it on the dog rather than being real direct about it. The neighborly thing to do would be to apologize for your chickens causing your neighbor distress and then take care of the problem.
