I have had chickens before but never raised them as chicks. We are bringing home about a dozen at the end of the week. Can you all tell me how much space and what else you would give them initially? I will get a heat lamp (even though it's going to be 90 degrees or 80's at least?), a box/crate (how big?), some chick starter food and a rodent style water bottle sounds helpful. Other ideas or must haves? Thanks in advance!

I'm getting a replacement batch of chicks soon. I'm new to this all too! Our first chicks had death by predator, so we are hoping that our new run design will work better than the old.

We have a dog crate - a large one, with a rabbit waterer in the door and a bowl zip tied to the door under it since it drips all over, that way they can drink the water that leaks too without waiting their turn. We also put the feeder up on a box in the shavings but our chicks were about 2 weeks old when we got them, so we will probably lower the feeder. The box helped keep the shavings and the poop out of the feeder, and even though it was one of the store bought chicken feeders they still got it all messy lol.

Hi !,

Sounds like a good plan! The level of the container where they will actually peck
at the feed should be the height of their backbone.
Best Success,
Karen
