hello my chickens are about 4-5 months old (my youngest is 3 months old) and I have tried offering them grit separate from their food and they don't seem to touch it. All they seem to do is just spread it around the pen and then the majority of it gets wasted. Is it really that bad to mix it in with their food. I am worried they won't be getting enough if I offer it seperately and they dont take it

Chickens are pretty smart about what they need for their gizzard. Once they take in the stones they need they won't eat any more until those are ground down and no longer effective. Just offer it on the side. It lasts a long time.

As long as your just feeding them their feed they won't need it when they start eating grass or other treats is when they will need grit for helping with digestion they usually know what they need also if they are free ranging any and depending on what your run has in it they could be getting the grit they need from there
