Please help me! He is gasping for air and have been mouth feeding him water with vitamins and electrolytes. He seemed fine earlier in the day but when I got home he seemed down again. I think it may be stress from shipping, they are about 6 days old. I have already lost one. He's not peeping, he has his eyes closed and looks very sleepy and lethargic. He doesn't have anything around his eyes or runny nose, idk what it could be. Please help!! His heartbeat seems to be getting fainter and fainter as the minutes tick by.

I don't want to lose another one! Any suggestions or quick fixes? Oh and their brooder is sanitized every other day, they drink their water, are in and out from heat lamp. Every one is fine and poop is normal. How can I relieve his stress? He is smaller than all the others, but was completely fine. He seems a bit thin, and I'm not sure what else to do. Help!!!

They are so fragile at this stage. Last year was my first batch and I lost 6 within first few days. Called the hatchery and they told me to put antibiotics in the water for a wk. No more losses after that. This year I've put probiotics in thier water right away and that group is thriving.

I know, I didn't know they were this fragile. I've had chicks and ducks many times and they've always done great. But I still love the turkeys though. He didn't make it last night :( but I hope the rest of the flock will be thriving and make it to adulthood:)

They will steal your heart. I think what works best is different for everyone and climate plays a role.

I know they definitely stole my heart right away. I just feel like they are like children. It just saddens me but I hope the rest will be okay!

They are like children, for sure. What breed did you get? Mine are Bourbon Reds. I have learned a bit and have so much more to go. I blame my husband for this love affair. He wanted a turkey, so I got him 15 last year. We decided early on to keep a few hens and a tom, sell the rest. Well 9 made it to adult 6 toms 3 hens. Had no problem finding a buyer in march. They took 4 toms. I cried like a blubbering fool after they drove away. I hope that part gets easier, as I'm not even a vegetarian.

I had ordered a barnyard special from Mcmurry, and received 10 ducks and 6 turkeys. I didn't know what breed they were until I got them and they're black Spanish turkeys. They are too cute, and surprisingly quiet. I wanted a variety, but my mother had been wanting ducks, they're her favorite, so I figured that would be good. But now I'm thinking of trying to find them locally, if possible. Just so they won't go through the shopping stress and all that. Aww! I've seen pictures of the bourbons they are beautiful! How are they? And I am definitely not a vegetarian either, I sure love to eat meat! But all my birds have stolen my heart! I had originally gotten a couple of chicks as meat birds, but I know I'll be bawling like a baby when I'll have to choose! But I also feel that a loved and healthy bird is better than any commercial birds!

That's exactly how I feel. My first shipment was murray mcmurray, chickens did fantastic. Turkey's, maybe was too much for them. Customer service was great. They talked with me and offered some input. They gave a store credit for the loses. I went with cackle hatchery this year. Ordered 15, they sent 17 Mid June. These guys are still doing fantastic. Maybe was a shorter trip. All my guys are real friendly and laid back. They love chatting and greeting. Even my neighbors have fallen for them. I don't find them to be dumb at all. They are very curious! That can get them in trouble. The hens are real good fliers and even with my best efforts nest where they please.

Oh how sweet!! I think that's what I may do next year. Or try to find a hatchery closer to me in Texas so the trip will be much quicker. I'm also hoping I could find some locally. My chicks and older chickens I got from tractor supply here in town, so they are doing just fine. But they never have turkeys available so I decided to go online. Yours are so big, how exciting! Even as little poults they are so fun to watch and hang out with! They are so sweet and they love belly rubs too!

Try Ideal Hatchery in Texas. Im from Texas too. They allow for small orders and let you do 10 poults and will send you about 12 males for warmth. I got them the next day. I lost only one male chicken so i have 11 roosters (still not sure what to do with them) and 10 healthy happy 4 month old narragansett turkey babies...
