Hello! I am brand new to BYC and I have a concerning question about my chicken. Fairly recently we got a new bunch of chicks from a not so great breeder (you could say I rescued them) the conditions were very unsanitary and one of the chicks already passed away from respritory something. I took the other 3 little ones to the vet today, but when I got home and went out to see my older girls( I keep them separated and wash my hands as to not expose the older ones to infection as well) I noticed that my Rhode Island Red named Ginger was making wierd noises almost like there was water in her stomach she was trying to swallow and I noticed that her crop was very inflamed. It has been abnormally hot here the last few months and my chickens are not used to this kind of heat. She vomited a few weeks ago and it was sticky and white and someone told me to not be concerned as that was partially due to the whether. Am I just being over worried because the little ones are sick or is it something I should be severely concerned with in the older Hen?

Sounds like your birds could use help getting through the hot weather. They need shade, shade and more shade. Natural or manufactured. Lots of cold fresh water, a shallow pan of water they could stand in - cool feet = cool chicken. Fans if necessary and mister hoses.

Chickens are often prone to crop issues- Cynthia has given you the proper link for help. Respiratory infections can be quite contagious. Hand washing is not enough. You need to change clothes, and especially shoes and tend to the "quarantined" (I hope) rescues AFTER tending to your established birds - to help minimize spread of infection.

I hope your hen will be alright, and you will be able to treat your rescued birds.

Welcome to BYC!

You've been given some good advice and a helpful link so I'll just say hello & hope your girl gets better soon.

Thanks for joining us!
