What's the best way to clean the coop if you have scaly leg mites? Two of my girls have a pretty mild case. I'm treating them with Bag Balm and MannaPro Scaly Mite Protector. I cleared and disposed of all the bedding and nest material, swept out the coop, and sprayed it down with a pyrethrin miticide for garden plants because I had it on hand. I sprayed the two nest boxes where the affected broodies had been spending all their time really well. After everything dried I put in new shavings.

Is there something else to do? I would like to avoid any powders. Both my husband and son have asthma and airborne particulates aggravate their condition. The coop is dusty enough as is.

Do these mites mostly stay on the birds? Is what I did to the coop plus treating the birds directly probably enough?

TIA for any suggestions.

Hi! I'm not at all an expert on this, but since you have Manna Pro Scaly Leg Protector, that sounds to me like it should help the coop just as much as the birds. If I were you, I'd probably spray the whole coop next time you clean it, not just the nesting boxes. Other than that, sounds like you've done a great job!

Thanks for the reply. I did spray the walls and floor of the coop and the nest boxes once really well. Then I gave the nest boxes an extra spray.

None of my other birds show signs so I'm hoping that with diligent treatment of the two bantams I will prevent spread. They roost in a different spot and prefer different nest boxes than the other birds so hopefully that works in my favor too.

Oh gotcha, I'm sure that will work then. Sounds like you've got everything covered! Just watch the others closely, and if you see even a hint of raised scales on another bird, don't be afraid to directly spray the whole flock. I'd only do that if you see signs of the mites spreading, though.

Good job and good luck!

Replace the roosts. I replace mine (I burn them) twice a year but I would do it at least onc. I simply use 2 x 4's wide side up and can usually get the local hardware store to sell me damaged ones for about a buck.

I have never used anything but a bleach solution to sanitize my coops. I generally only do it twice a year once in the spring and once in the fall. Scaly leg mites are devil to get rid of. But I've had good success with my method of replacing roosts and sanitize with bleach for 40 plus years.

The bleach solution.

I simple bought one of the gallon pump sprayers at Home Depot put in about 3 cups of bleach the rest water and spray every nook and cranny of the coop.

Wear a mask, ventilate well.

Lock the birds out while doing so and until the solution dries.

This has worked well for me for over 40 years my lice and mite problems are kept at bay.
