Hi everyone! One of my chickens was infested with Northern fowl mites. We were able to kill the mites with diatomaceous earth but she clumps on her wings still. We assume it's their larvae. Does anyone know how to clean the clumps off? Do we clean each one individually with water and soap or cut the feather off that have it?

I tried to attach a photo but I can't.

Pictures can really help. DE is not that affective a treatment for lice or mites.Permethrin garden dust or 10% spray, or Sevin dust are much better at killing them. They have to be reapplied after 7-10 days to kill the eggs. The coop bedding needs to be removed and replaced after spraying the floor, walls, roosts, and nest boxes. Some use coconut oil to remove lice eggs. Wood ash (from a fireplace) added to their dust baths can help in prevention. Here are some good links to make sure that what you are seeing are mites, not lice:

It's been about 6 weeks since we discovered them. We put this powder Callahan's (farm store) recommended, cleaned out the coop and put diatomaceaous earth in the coop. we also put a dust bath bucket with the powder recommended by Callahan's so they put it on themselves naturally. The mites were killed the next day and so far, no more mites. We thought the clumps would eventually go away but they haven't.

Does anyone know how to upload a photo?
