Thinking about getting another 8 1/2 month pullet as 3 out of 7 chicks turned out to be roos. I dont have an extra coop to quarentine her. The extra coop
is being used for 4 4 1/2 month old silkies. Should I try to integrate the silkies to quarentine the new pullet? Anybother ideas?

Can you put up a temporary pen or maybe keep her in your basement in a big dog crate? At 4 1/2 months old the silkies might also be fine being integrated into your main flock to free up the coop too, if you wanted to do that.

Adding a single hen by herself into an established flock is going to cause a lot of fighting. Eveyone knows this bird does not belong and gives her a peck, and she does not have a buddy. I would not attempt a single bird, at least get a pair.

Most backyard flocks do not have room to properly quarantine, and if you don't properly do it, you may as well not do it at all. Merely separating the birds is not quarantine. If you don't there is a risk that a disease can be spread to your whole flock.

Im integrating my 4 silkies today inti the flock and using their coop to quarentine the new pullet. How far away does her coop need to be from the flocks run? We normally free range, but can keep them in their run for a month ot two.

Is it really terrible if I only add one pullet?

I've done it before as it was necessary - a rescue hen taken in from a terrible situation, and she did fine. She was a little lonely and a bit picked on at first but she fits right in now. It is harder on them than if they have a friend, though.
