For the past 3-1/2 years we've had great layers in four black Australorps. Their egg production has dwindled over the past four months. We recently purchased three barred rock and an Ameraucana. After four weeks of hens stalking the young ones we decided to give away our Australorps. Now we have suspicions of two of our youth being roos. I'm hoping to learn how to confirm which are which. We live in the city so roosters are not allowed. Look forward to learning from seasoned chicken keepers.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! I see you have posted in the what breed gender section of the forum. I'm sure lots of members there will be able to help you with sexing your new birds.

Wishing you the very best of luck, I hope they turn out to be pullets for you.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm sorry that your Australorps laying has dropped off, but age inevitably does that to any breed. Barred Rocks and Ameraucanas are both great breeds, but based on personal experience they will likely not match the peak lay rate of your Australorps. Still, you should get 3-4 eggs per week per hen from them. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your new birds.

Well that's one way to skip integration issues, I hope the new owners aren't going to eat them. You can post photos of your suspected cockerels at "what breed or gender is this."
