Just a quick post.
I caught my meaties "roosting" on the bottom boards of the coop wall.
So, I made them a roosting bar to see what they would do.
Pictures are better than words.

The meaties are 5 weeks old. They have a lot of room to move about. There is nice sand under the straw. They dig and fuss in the sand all day. I use the straw to get poop out efficiently. They roost and play constantly. Labor Day weekend is when I'll process them.

Did some quail yesterday with a friend. My first taste of quail. If they are good, I'll have some of those around too.

Looks like a chicken sunflower!

My meaties have been alot of fun. Only 14 birds in a 12' x 16' space.
They run and play. Sand baths are going on constantly.
Roosting in the evening and lots and lots of chasing around, challenging one another and just being regular chickens.

They don't like the black rubber on the end of my hoe/rake. So they run around in circles trying to avoid it as I'm cleaning their area.
No casualties so far.
They are just much happier than my last little flock of meaties.

Be good to yourselves.

They do so like to roost on the low bar I made for them. It has been interesting watching this batch of birds. They have quite a bit of room and they take full advantage. They run and play. There are 7 hens and 7 roos. The roos challenge one another all the time. Sitting on the roost bar keeps them off the dirt. They stay much cleaner and smell much better!

Just a little cleavage going on there in the second picture!

They are all weighing in at 7-1/2 to 8-1/2 pounds. Next wednesday is the end of week eight. Since day one I have chased them around three times a day. Since they are in a pen because of the predator situation here, I took to shooing them with my straw hat. They go around and around until they can't go any more. Gets the heart rates pumping and the blood moving. Then they all stop for a drink of water and a well-deserved rest.

An unfortunate side effect is that when I forget to take my hat off before going in to feed them, they run like the dickens!

They have not behaved much like their reputation. More like regular chickens.

Sunday is processing day. My 14 and a friend's 35. We have lots of help lined up. Supposed to be a beautiful day for weather too..
